The Nutcracker is a beautiful family holiday tradition. Children of all ages recognize the famous Tchaikovsky score, but the full length ballet can be long and overwhelming for the youngest members of the family (and some of the elders too). Immersive Nutcracker: A Winter Miracle is the perfect alternate Nutcracker experience that will bring joy to the little ones in the family and the grown ups who experience it with them.

The squeals and gleeful exclamations by children all around us was pure bliss. It was fun to see the children’s reactions to the projections from snowstorms and fireworks to toy soldiers and snowball fights.

Immersive Nutcracker includes some of Tchaikovsky’s original score as well as an animated retelling of the Christmas story ballet. In addition to the animation, they have video of dancers playing the parts of various characters in the ballet from Clara and Fritz to the sugar plum fairy.

Projections fill the 500,000 cubic feet of space including the walls and floor beneath their little dancing feet. There are benches for parents to sit and take in the moment watching their child spin along with the projections or to snuggle up together and take it all in together.

On the ground are mirrored, crystal-like sculptures that reflect all that is going on around the room. Immersive Nutcracker: A Winter Miracle is at Lighthouse ArtSpace Boston at The Castle 130 Columbus Avenue, Boston and runs through January 1st with morning, afternoon, and evening showings. While I think the most awestruck and gleeful attendees would be those six and under with their families, the exhibit is one that a group of friends of any age could enjoy for a unique evening out. The sensation you get in some of the peaceful winter scenes and playful holiday scenes has no age limits.
